Mouth-Watering Dishes You Can Prepare With Sooji (Rawa)

Sooji, or rawa, is a staple in every Indian kitchen. You can make so many dishes you can prepare with sooji Rawa is first ground and then used to make batters for flatbreads like dosa, idli, uttapam, etc. These are served as breakfast items, along with coconut chutney, sambar, and buttermilk.

Rawa Dosa

Sooji dosa is a popular dish in South Indian cuisine. It’s made by mixing sooji with water and then steaming it, which gives it a different texture than regular dosas. Sooji dosas are usually eaten with sambar or chutney, but they can also be served with other side dishes like potato roast or vegetables like spinach or carrots.


Sooji used to prepare various dishes like idli, dosa, and uttapams. Idlis are steamed cakes made from fermented batter consisting of rice or wheat along with lentils such as urad dal or black gram. The fermentation process helps break down the starch into simple sugars, making it easier for our bodies to digest them. Sooji idlis are soft on the inside and crispy on the outside – an absolute delight!


Upma is a south Indian dish made with semolina and rice. It’s usually served with coconut chutney and can be served with dal or sambar as well.


Revani is a delicious semolina-based cake that is soaked with sugar syrup. It is also referred to as Coffee Cake in Turkey and Greece, while in Egypt and other Middle Eastern countries, it goes by the name of Basbousa. The cake has many variations depending on the country, but the main ingredients are always the same – semolina (roasted), butter or margarine, eggs, vanilla extract/essence, and sugar syrup.

Instant Rawa Appe

This is an instant breakfast option and is very popular in Indian households. You can prepare it by soaking sooji in dahi (curd), mixing with spices, and folding it into a dough. It tastes delicious when served with chutney or pickle. Pack these delicious appum in tiffin and carry them to school or college!


Dhokla is a popular Gujarati snack. It’s made with sooji (rawa) and curd, which gives it a soft, spongy texture. Dhoklas are usually eaten with yoghourt and chutney. They are a great dish to make for kids because they can help you mix all the ingredients together, roll out small balls of dough, then press them into the steamer trays before they go into the steamer!
